After following the construction of the Burj Dubai for a couple years, it was a surprise yesterday to find out that it was officially open up to the public (or at least the owners of inner real-estate). It's been in construction since 2004, and was to be opened either early 2009 or 2010.
The developers have unofficially claimed the tower to be 818 metres, with about 160 floors. It will also be the first to feature the worlds tallest night club. It will feature various exercise facilities, a shopping centre, indoor and (unnervingly) outdoor pool.
Figure 1: The name Burj Dubai literally stands for Tower Dubai, or in English (flipped), Dubai Tower, seeing as Arabic is written backwards compared to english and other languages. Its name matches the Dubai Fountain, the worlds largest fountain.
Figure 2: Mid-near end construction on Dubai Tower [Burj Dubai]
Figure 3: End construction/opening. Did they accidentally forget to name it 'Pimpin' Tower'?
I'll speak for all of us here -- I would hate to be the one(s) cleaning those windows. Oh, and this picture looks awesome.

As much as it's an amazing, historic feat, I wouldn't think it smart to build something this huge. If it is this big, obviously we are going to have some major businesses locate themselves partially inside, as well as communications for networks will probably also be partially powered by this building. While this is all great, it gives a great target for terrorists. America just recently witnessed a terrorist attempt on Christmas, and obviously there are some people out there who just don't believe in world peace. The World Trade Center (twin towers) was attacked by terrorists, simply because it helped power electricity and device signals (like cell phones) for the entire world.

Ya, I wonder what they'd name the wireless internet connection in there. Dubai Connect (or Connect Dubai in arabic lol). But ya, as much as terrorists hate the U.S., they still attack places in their own country just to kill innocent people and prove a point.
Now, seeing how many people potentially would be in the building at a time, I would hate to see a terrorist act happen there.

Thats flipping huge! I love the top down shot because it really shows how magnificent the structure is. (I'm sure there will be some unexpected, mushy, greenish brownish projectiles released by some people using the outdoor pool when they look down if you know what I mean.

To put the true height into perspective, imagine this. It takes a number of minutes (even for really fast people) to run around a 400m track twice to reach the distance of 800 metres. This is on flat ground. Now imagine that except straight up in the air. Almost 1km. The reveal date wasn't actually yesterday I realized -- it's today. 'I'm going to go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight' I swear.

A Nigerian (I believe) was on a flight heading for the U.S. While they were about to land, the passenger tried to ignite a bomb that he had hidden in his pants. He epicly failed though, and burned his hands.

Yes, the tower itself is huge and a massive technological feat. I would be scared of the height though. Probably more scared to go to the top and look out then to jump out of a plane at that height.
And yeah satan it is pretty amazing. At first, you see a bit of stuff in the distance, but the more you scroll down the page, the more you are able to see the sheer height of it, especially compared to adjacent skyscrapers.

Hhaha yeah. People probably thought he was jacking off. I can just imagine this:
Terrorist sitting in the back of the plane, with his hands in his pants, smoke coming out.
A US business man says "Hey man, need some lube?"
xD
